Why Uganda is One of Africa's Top Safari Destinations

Uganda's appeal lies in the sheer richness of its ecosystems. In a single trip, travellers can move from the misty rainforests of Bwindi to the savannah plains of Queen Elizabeth, the Nile gorge at Murchison Falls, and the terraced hills of Lake Bunyonyi. This variety makes Uganda ideal for high-impact safari experiences like gorilla and chimpanzee trekking tours alongside classic game drives.

In addition, Uganda is internationally recognized for:

  • The largest population of mountain gorillas in the world
  • The highest primate diversity in East Africa
  • Tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector
  • Exceptional birdlife (over 1,000 species recorded)
  • Community-focused, conservation-led tourism

As a result, Uganda safaris are immersive, ethical, and deeply rewarding for travellers who value depth, wilderness, and authentic encounters.

Uganda Wildlife & Safari Experiences

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi & Mgahinga

Gorilla trekking tours in Uganda take place mainly in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park—a UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting nearly half the world's mountain gorillas. With 19+ habituated families across four sectors (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo) and the exclusive Gorilla Habituation Experience in Rushaga, Uganda offers the broadest range of gorilla encounters in Africa. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, on the Virunga volcanoes, adds a quieter alternative with golden monkey trekking.

Big Game Drives & Boat Safaris

Queen Elizabeth National Park is famous for tree-climbing lions in Ishasha, elephants, buffalo, and the wildlife-rich Kazinga Channel boat safari. Murchison Falls National Park—Uganda's largest park—delivers dramatic Nile cruises to the base of the falls, plus game drives for giraffe, lion, and Uganda kob. The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on the route north is the only place in Uganda to track rhinos on foot.

Primate Safaris & Forest Exploration

Kibale Forest National Park is the primate capital of East Africa, home to ~1,500 chimpanzees and 13 primate species, including red colobus and L'Hoest's monkeys. Together with Bwindi and Mgahinga, it makes Uganda an unmatched destination for primate-focused safaris, rounded off by serene lakeside time at Lake Bunyonyi.

Uganda Travel Essentials

Most Uganda safaris begin and end at Entebbe International Airport. From there, well-planned road circuits or scheduled light-aircraft flights connect Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, and Kibale. Distances are longer than in Rwanda, so multi-day itineraries are recommended to enjoy the country at the right pace.

The best time to visit Uganda for trekking and game viewing is during the dry seasons from June to September and December to February. Trails in Bwindi and Mgahinga are firmer and wildlife concentrates around water sources. Uganda is a year-round destination, however—the green seasons (March–May and October–November) offer lush scenery, easier permit availability, and excellent birding.

Gorilla permits in Uganda are USD 800 per person for foreign non-residents, with discounted rates for East African residents and citizens. The premium Gorilla Habituation Experience in Rushaga (Bwindi) is USD 1,500. Permits sell out quickly in peak season, so we recommend booking at least 3–6 months in advance. A tourist visa is required for most nationalities and can be obtained online via the official e-Visa portal.
